What happened at Chiefs’ Meeting As Komphela Pressure Grows

Kaizer Chiefs called a team meeting at Naturena following Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to the Chilli Boys – Chippa United, with members of the playing staff, technical team and management attending.

The Amakhosi’s chances of pushing for the Absa Premiership title were all but ended this weekend as they went down to the Chilli Boys and Mamelodi Sundowns beat Baroka, with Masandawana now 10 points clear of Steve Komphela’s side.

Pressure on Komphela is continuing to grow as he approaches the end of his contract with the Glamour Boys, and there were unpleasant scenes at FNB Stadium as chants of ‘Steve Must Go’ were coupled with items being thrown at both the coach and his players from the stands.

The Siya crew reported previously that a meeting had been called for Sunday morning, although the nature of the meeting remained unknown at that point in time.

Now, Siya sources have informed Soccer Laduma that the meeting – which lasted for several hours and included a team lunch – is believed to have been to discuss the problems that the club have had of late, with the players said to have been told to effectively pull up their socks as they approach almost three seasons without a trophy.

While there have been calls for Komphela’s exit, it has been suggested that the meeting this weekend was more to do with the players’ performances and lack of results rather than the future of the coach.

Chippa became the first team to beat Chiefs by three clear goals since AS Vita (3-0) more than four years ago, and the first South Africans to do so since Mamelodi Sundowns beat them 4-1 back in 2012.

Chiefs face bottom-of-the-table Platinum Stars next weekend prior to their crucial Nedbank Cup semifinal with Free State Stars on April 21st.
